Mining Ministry Launches Online Mining License Application Prospective investors in the mining sector will soon be able to apply for mining licenses online and receive a response within 90 days. This is one of the reform measures aimed at cutting out brokers and reduce corruption in the licensing processes. The proposal is among many others contained in the mining bill currently in its second reading in parliament. The bill advocates for creation of a mining advisory board to oversee and assess the online mining licence applications before final approvals are granted by the cabinet secretary for mining.

The government has revoked licenses of mining companies that were awarded between January and may this year. This is to determine their nature and benefits to the country and host communities. Mining cabinet secretary Najib Balala revoked 31 mining licenses, saying they were issued under unclear circumstances. He consequently formed a seven-man team to assess the validity of each license, draft a recommendation and make a report that will inform the mining ministry's decision. Sally Mbilu reports.

A delay in the constitution of a Mineral Rights Board is holding back the issuance of mining licenses to investors who have already applied as per the new Mining Act 2016. This is according to Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu who says the licenses can only be granted by the new body.
Prospective investors in the mining industry now have a new digital platform for processing all their requirements including licenses. The online portal is expected to reduce the duration it takes to acquire a mining license from 18 months to a maximum of three months. Mining Principal Secretary Patrick Omutia said that this will replace the old cumbersome paper based system.

The ministry of mining has cancelled the mining license for Mid Migori Mining company which is engaged in gold mining in Migori County. The latest decision by Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala is likely to throw the operation of the miner which is partly owned by UK based Red Rock resources into disarray. Balala further notes that the company is suspected to be hoarding the license for speculation purposes. O'Brien Kimani.

Entree Gold has received a mining license covering its Nomkhon Bohr coal discovery, outlined through exploration efforts in 2008-2009. The new mining license comprises approximately 14,030 hectares and covers the northwest corner of the former Togoot exploration license. The portion of the property included in the mining license is mainly underlain by Permian sediments which are known to host rich coal deposits in this part of the Gobi Desert.
The long wait for mining companies to get exploration licenses in the country is about to come to an end.
